8 Roster Predictions for What the Vikings Will Do Next

Gus Edwards with the Ravens in 2018 — now the subject of a Vikings prediction.predict the future, offering one roster prophecy apiece about the club’s next notable transaction.

Question to our panel: “What’s the Vikings’ next notable roster move? It doesn’t have to be rim-rattling like a Jalen Ramsey trade, but it should probably be more than, ‘Vikings sign long snapper Paul Smith from Rhode Island Tech!’ What’s the next move?

These are the replies.

1. Sign RB Chase Edmonds

From: Adam New

2. Adding a Starting CB

From: Ted Schwerzler

Without a specific name, and I’m not sure who it will be, I’m still confident that the Vikings will acquire a starting-caliber cornerback.

Our writers sound off on Minnesota’s next eyebrow-raising roster move.

3. Sign RB Gus Edwards

From: Janik Eckardt

Jordan Mason, but why not acquire a third one? The 30-year-old Gus Edwards is another powerful runner and would be an ideal RB3 for an offense that is expected to run the ball more than in the first three campaigns under Kevin O’Connell’s watch.

4. More Competition at Punter

From: Ali Siddiqui

The Vikings will add a punter to push Ryan Wright. I don’t have a name in mind, though.

5. Josh Metellus’ Extension

From: Wes Johnson

6. Sign CB Rasul Douglas

From: Josh Frey

Rasul Douglas did not put together an overly spectacular season in 2024, but the 30-year-old cornerback has more than proven he is capable of playing outstanding football at the NFL level. Besides, the Vikings don’t need Douglas to be spectacular; they need another veteran presence in their secondary to help steer the young guys in the right direction.

7. Sign CB Asante Samuel Jr.

From: Dustin Baker

The verdict on Samuel Jr.’s medical prognosis is reportedly due in July — a few days away — and let’s bank on that coming back clean.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will make the long-rumored Samuel Jr. transaction come to fruition, inking him to a one-year “prove it” deal worth $4 million or so. Samuel Jr. and Isaiah Rodgers will duke it out at training camp, with the Vikings securing the best of both worlds: a shot at employing Samuel Jr. for the long term and adding cornerback roster depth in 2025.

Randy Gurzi wrote earlier this month, “During OTAs, the Dallas Cowboys were fielding an interesting trio at cornerback. With DaRon Bland working in the slot, the Cowboys had Andrew Booth and Kaiir Elam on the outside. While Elam performed better than expected, the Cowboys don’t want to go into Week 1 with that starting unit. With Trevon Diggs and rookie Shavon Revel Jr. still not healed from offseason knee surgery, that very well could be the case.”

“That’s why they should be on the lookout for another capable starter, which they could in Asante Samuel Jr. Looking for his new home after four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Samuel was recently named one of the top available free agents by NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal.”

We shall see the Vikings take the plunge before anyone else.

8. Vikings Add Different QB2

From: Cole Smith

The Vikings’ next notable roster move will be to swing a trade for another backup quarterback to be their QB2. Sam Howell may have starting experience, but does he have the maturity and time in the NFL to mentor J.J. McCarthy the way Kevin O’Connell and Co. want?
