Autumn is fashion’s big annual reset—and luckily enough for our collective closets, 2025’s fall fashion trends are perhaps even more exciting than usual. As with last year, boho is still at the forefront, with romantic lace dresses, suede boots, and faux-fur coats giving off a distinctly ’70s vibe. But the look is evolving: Washed-out plaids and cropped trenches are bringing things firmly into a new era, and making our wardrobes all the more versatile for it.
Beyond earth tones and sheer materials, though, fall will also be defined by bolder swings. The color of the season is purple, believe it or not, and an eclectic take on minimalism is ready to help you make a splash at your next dressed-up event. (You’ll also never guess what’s replacing leopard print this year.) Ready to bring your rotation up to speed? These are the major fall fashion trends our editors are shopping now.

Earthy plaid, full skirts, luxuriously thick outerwear—so many of fall’s standout runways featured hallmarks of the English countryside. At Ralph Lauren, Isabel Marant, and Patou, models in heritage checks and plaids could have been right at home in the Cotswolds. Equestrian touches at Burberry and MKDT Studio, meanwhile, made a strong case for the return of riding boots. And luxury met performance at Louis Vuitton and Victoria Beckham, where the outerwear looked sturdy enough to withstand country chores.

2. Eclectic minimalism

Minimalism is anything but boring these days. Led by labels like The Row and designers like Phoebe Philo, the look is morphing into something weirder and more memorable, and you don’t need to spend a ton to ace it. The key, as exemplified by brands such as Prada and The Garment above, is employing subtle tweaks—oddball layering, smart asymmetry, slightly exaggerated proportions—to turn basics into showstoppers. You’d be shocked by how much a high-neck jacket, layered skirt, or draped top can do to elevate your existing wardrobe.

3. Preppy academia
From left: Tory Burch, Bally, MKDT StudioWWD/Alena Zakirova/Matt Jelonek/Getty Images
While “collegiate style” might bring the easygoing undergraduate to mind, many of this season’s best collections took inspiration from a different muse: the grad student. Sweater vests, striped shirts, wool slacks, turtleneck sweaters, leather brogues—so many pieces would be right at home on a TA. These are not looks for lounging on the quad; they’re for hitting the books, grading papers, and sipping coffee at odd hours. Channel your inner academic by mixing preppy staples (paper-thin cardigans, loose blazers) with cheeky twists on the classics (long pleated skirts, tassel loafers), à la Bally and Tory Burch.

4. Vintage lace

Sprays of lace populated so many of our favorite fall 2025 collections, evoking a romantic (and almost gothic) sense of glamour. Chloé, Dior, Fendi, Saint Laurent, Zimmermann, McQueen, Chanel, and Stella McCartney used vintage-inspired lace in a spectrum of shades, most heavily in white and black. Take this as your sign to try the see-through trend, considering so many of these fall dresses are slightly sheer. (With the right layering, including the built-in coverage of the pieces below, you’ll be completely safe from showing anything you’re not comfortable with.) Forget the boudoir; these delicate finds deserve to be seen.

5. Rich-lady leather
From left: Kallmeyer, Hermès, FendiGeorge Chinsee/Peter White/WWD/Getty Images
Sure, leather always trends this time of year. But across the board this season, the material enjoyed the star treatment. Long leather coats graced models at Kallmeyer and Tom Ford; luxe bombers appeared at Lemaire and Eckhaus Latta; Fendi and Hermès rendered wardrobe essentials like shorts and shirtdresses in the stuff. It’s all in pursuit of nostalgic glamour, harkening back to the ’80s and ’90s—exactly the kind of vampy, moody style that makes dressing for autumn so exciting.

6. Purple reign
From left: Tibi, Dries Van Noten, LanvinVictor VIRGILE/Peter White/Estrop/Getty Images
The color of the season is shaping up to be a playful one. Runways were splashed with all shades of purple, from rich wine at Tibi and Lanvin to juicy, artificial purple at Auralee and Dries Van Noten. And that’s just the beginning: boots at Miu Miu, coats at Versace, dresses at Altuzarra, and bottoms at Gucci all went purple. In a season usually dominated by more subdued shades of brown, it’s a welcome jolt of energy—and since it looks good with white, black, and red, it’s also easier to style than you might think. Add in ballet flats here and there, go a little bigger with a barn jacket, or show out in a bold aubergine number; there are no wrong answers.

7. Slouch meets structure
From left: Ferragamo, Rabanne, Tod’sEstrop/Victor VIRGILE/Pietro D’Aprano/Getty Images
Across so many of our favorite fall shows, the accessories walked the line between structured and slouchy. Leather fall boots sagged just so on models at Rabanne, Sacai, Zimmermann, and Chanel couture, lending a lived-in feel to their runway ensembles. On the bags front, it’s the same story: Ferragamo, Tod’s, and Balmain showed sturdy handbags with built-in slouch. It’s the illusion of being laid-back—and it fits in perfectly with the season’s bohemian mood.

8. Zebra stripes
From left: Nina Ricci, Duran Lantink, BalmainVictor VIRGILE/Victor Boyko/Getty Images
Fall 2025’s answer to last year’s leopard-spot mania has officially landed, and it’s even bolder. Graphic zebra stripes graced collections from storied houses like Nina Ricci and newcomers like Duran Lantink, all styled with more-is-more aplomb. And instead of reading “safari,” the results feel entirely sophisticated, making a convincing case for covering your fall layers—or at least your shoes and handbags—in the stuff. For the animals, the pattern is camouflage; for us, it’s an easy way to turn heads. (No zebras were harmed in the making of this runway report.)

9. Boho furs
From left: Valentino, Miu Miu, ChloéWWD/Victor VIRGILE/Marc Piasecki/Getty Images
While faux fur popped up in far too many fall collections to recount, our very favorite examples used coats, stoles, and trimmings to evoke ’70s bohemia. The rock star looms large this season; see the Bianca Jagger–worthy ensembles at Chloé and Valentino, plus the fur-draped sirens at Miu Miu and Simone Rocha. You could go more straightforward, but what’s the fun in that? Channel your inner Jim Morrison or Janis Joplin in these slightly outré finds.
