I think that sourdough bread is having its biggest year since 2020. During the earliest days of the pandemic, so many people were stuck inside indefinitely that they decided to give sourdough starter a real try.
Making your own starter is a notoriously finicky process. Like anything in the realm of baking, it requires accurate measurements, appropriate temperatures and lots of time. Once your starter is established, it’s easy to use it to make endless loaves of crusty sourdough bread. But before you get to that point, it can be a bit of a headache. (Am I being too obvious that I have tried and failed to get my starter going…twice?)
But luckily, I don’t need to worry about any of this anymore. Because Bath & Body Works just launched one of the best-smelling candles I’ve ever had the pleasure of placing in my home.
What does the new Bath & Body Works sourdough candle smell like?
Sure, it does smell like sourdough. But it’s so much more than that. For starters, it comes in a beautiful matte, terracotta-colored jar. It’s very reminiscent of a bread oven, and I like how rustic it looks and feels.
The fragrance notes are described as “freshly baked sourdough, whipped butter and olive oil drizzle.” I think this is perfect because there is a creamy sweetness to the overall scent that does make me think of slathering a slice in tons of butter. This is the kind of scent that really fills a room nicely without being overpowering. A lot of baked good-inspired candles tend to smell really sweet, but this one is more savory and has great warmth.
I placed it on my stovetop after I finished deep-cleaning my kitchen. I figured that it was the best way to reap the benefits of smelling a freshly baked loaf without any of the hassle…or the dirty dishes. When I had a friend over later, hours after I had extinguished the candle, they asked me what I had baked earlier. Honestly, I can’t give it a better review than that!

This sourdough candle is part of the brand’s new Rooted collection for spring and is available now. You can find it online along with the rest of the collection. If you really like food-scented body care products, then you will probably love this launch. The Carrot Charm body cream is another highlight for me. Any of these items would be a welcome addition to Easter baskets!
