Former NFL defensive lineman Josh Mauro died from an acute combination of fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol intoxication, according to records released by the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The report stated that Mauro passed away on April 23 at the age of 35, with his death officially ruled accidental.
Mauro spent eight seasons in the NFL, building a reputation as a tough and reliable presence along the defensive line. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound defender played six seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before later spending time with the New York Giants and the then-Oakland Raiders.
His best statistical season came in 2016 with Arizona, when he appeared in 15 games, starting 13, and recorded 32 tackles while helping anchor the Cardinals’ defensive front.
Before reaching the NFL, Mauro starred at Stanford University, where he developed into one of the top defensive linemen in the Pac-12. He eventually entered the league and carved out a lengthy professional career defined by versatility and toughness.
Mauro’s final NFL season came in 2021 with the Cardinals. Over the course of his career, he appeared in 80 NFL games, making 40 starts and recording five career sacks.
News of his passing has left many throughout the football community mourning the loss of a player remembered for his work ethic, physical style of play, and dedication to the game.
