She should win the Oscar for having exquisite taste!
If you’ve been following the Oscar race at all, then you know that Jessie Buckley is a frontrunner. She was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s fantastic 2020 novel about William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, navigating the loss of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet.
Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal do a wonderful job of bringing Agnes and Shakespeare to life in the movie. I’ve been a fan of Jessie’s work for a long time, so I love that she’s getting so much positive attention for this role. I was listening to an episode of the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware, when I heard Jessie describe what she would eat for her last meal. It’s probably the best answer anyone has ever had!
What would Jessie Buckley’s last meal be?
If you’re not already a fan of Table Manners, you should get on board. Singer Jessie Ware and her mother, Lennie, invite guests over to enjoy a meal and talk all things food while they eat together. It’s a really delightful production, and I love seeing so many celebrities in such a relaxed interview environment. When they had Jessie Buckley on, they asked her what her last meal would be, and her response was perfect.
“I would have oysters and chips and a dirty gin martini for starters,” she said. “And then I would have my dad’s homemade, hot-out-of-the-oven brown bread.”
Now, since Jessie Buckley is Irish, “chips” in this context means french fries. She also clarifies that she would want Irish oysters, specifically. She reveals that the secret to her dad’s brown bread is the kind of flour that he uses. It’s called macroom flour, and it’s a stone-ground whole-wheat flour produced in Ireland.
The next course for her last meal would be a glass of wine (“chilled, light-bodied red”) and her husband Freddie’s home-cooked anchovy pasta. It’s a recipe from the New York Times that he cooks for the two of them frequently. After some light sleuthing, I think it’s probably this Midnight Pasta recipe.
And for dessert? “A bottomless bag of chocolate buttons.” Finally, she’d end her meal with either a cup of tea or an old-fashioned. Like I said, this is the best answer I think anyone has ever had for what their last meal would be.
