I know that this might sound odd, but I despise tomatoes and love ketchup. There’s just something about the texture of a raw tomato that’s off-putting to me, but I do love the flavor! And while there’s nothing wrong with classic tomato ketchup—especially when it’s paired with a hot, salty order of fries—I’m always intrigued when a condiment gets a fun flavor upgrade.
And Heinz is giving ketchup fans not one, but two new flavors just in time for tailgate season. They are both are inspired by food trends that seem to be absolutely everywhere right now.
What are the new Heinz ketchup flavors?
The first new variety is Heinz Simply Spicy Ketchup, which combines red ripe tomatoes, spices and real jalapenos for a bold kick. It sounds like the kind of condiment that could make its way onto just about everything in my kitchen. Think: scrambled eggs, burgers, chicken and obviously, french fries. Basically, anywhere you’d use regular ketchup is fair game for a little spicy upgrade.
Then there’s Heinz Simply Pickle Ketchup, which combines Heinz’s signature tomato base with a bright and briny pickle flavor. If you’re the type of person who asks for extra pickles on your sandwiches, this one may be calling your name. As a Chicagoan, I know that ketchup doesn’t belong on a hot dog…but I might be willing to make an exception for this one!
The flavors also tap into two major food trends. According to Heinz, 95% of consumers have reported eating hot or spicy foods this year, and sales of pickle-flavored products have continued to grow by more than 30% year over year.
When will the new Heinz ketchup flavors be available?
Both the Heinz Simply Spicy and Simply Pickle varieties will be rolling out at retailers nationwide at the end of September. They come in 13.5-ounce bottles for $3.99. It’s just in time to add to your football tailgating essentials or to create a game-day buffet at home. Whether you’re team spicy, team pickle or simply team “put ketchup on everything,” there’s a new bottle to add to your condiment collection.
