Warm your heart (and the rest of your body) with a mug of hot cocoa and these adorable whipped cream heart toppers.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t always have to be about a fancy bottle of wine or a glass of champagne. Even a mug of hot cocoa can feel special with a little bit of extra love. On February 14, forgo the usual hot cocoa toppers and turn homemade whipped cream into hearts! They can be prepared and customized in a matter of minutes and then kept in the freezer until you’re ready to surprise your loved ones with a homemade treat.

Making these heart toppers couldn’t be easier. Simply whip up the desired amount of cream, tint it (if you want), and decorate. I made them with my young daughters, and they loved every minute, mainly because it involved licking whipped cream off the beaters and using tons of sprinkles!

Ingredients

  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Confectioners’ sugar
  • Red or pink food coloring
  • Sprinkles, sanding sugar or other decorations

Prepare the desired amount of whipped cream. This can be regular whipped cream or even a stabilized whipped cream recipe. If desired, tint it red or pink for Valentine’s Day, or just keep it white.

Cover a small baking tray with nonstick foil or waxed paper. Place the whipped cream in a piping bag fitted with a large tip, then pipe heart shapes onto the prepared tray.

Editor’s Tip: To make sure I’m not making hearts that are too big or too small for my mug of hot cocoa, I like to invert my mug on the foil or waxed paper and trace the size of the circle. Then you can pipe the hearts inside this circle.

Once they’re all piped, decorate each heart to your heart’s content!

Place the tray in the freezer and freeze until set. When ready to serve, peel away the heart from the foil and place it on top of a mug of hot chocolate.

Once the whipped cream hearts have been piped onto the tray, that’s when the fun really begins. Decorate the hearts with sprinkles, sanding sugar or crushed up freeze-dried berries. I even tried some dried rose petals (though any edible flowers would be cute) and a sprinkle of edible gold dust. You could also turn them into “conversation hearts” by piping on words using melted chocolate or decorating gel.
