It’s WAG Season

It’s WAG Season

Whether you’re a Knicks season ticket holder or have to Google “What is a touchdown?” to follow a football game, you’re likely familiar with at least a few WAGs—the wives and girlfriends of professional athletes. Widespread obsession with women dating or married to top athletes originally gained traction in the early aughts, mainly in the UK surrounding high-profile soccer players. One of the first people referenced as a WAG? None other than Victoria Beckham—due to David, of course.

Today, we want to know what WAGs are wearing, where they’re shopping, and how they juggle their high-profile relationships with the demands of motherhood, travel, game-day anxiety, and more. Hence the dedicated fan pages, subreddits, and Tumblr accounts documenting their every move. And lest we forget reality TV shows like WAGs Boutique, WAG Nation, Basketball Wives, and Netflix series WAGs to Riches—all highlighting the luxurious, alluring wives of these women.

There is a lot going on in professional sports right now: the NBA Playoffs and Stanley Cup Playoffs are both happening; the WNBA and MLB recently kicked off their seasons; tennis stars are battling it out at the French Open; and this weekend, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, face off in the Champions League final. The competition has been stellar thus far… and so has the WAG fashion—namely the bags. We’ve seen Birkins and classic Chanel flaps in team colors, LV Speedy’s decked out with sentimental charms, and practical carryalls from Goyard and Prada. Of course, we’re curious to know what’s inside of them come game-day.

Who better to shed more light on these It bags than the It WAGs who carry them? Earlier this week at the illusive and dimly lit Crane Club in downtown Manhattan, we sat down with Jordyn Woods, Kendall Murray, Katia Reguero Lindor, and Marta Xargay Casademont to do just that—and get the courtside scoop on everything WAG-worthy.

The New York Knicks may have made it to the NBA finals for the first time in decades, but many eyes have been on Jordyn Woods, the longtime girlfriend of 7-foot center Karl Anthony Towns. Woods, first introduced to us as a Kardashian bestie, has since surpassed friend-to-a-friend status and instead has cemented herself as a model, business owner, influencer, and TV personality.

Vogue: How did you and your partner first meet?

Woods: It’s kind of a long story, but we were friends before we started dating. I was going through a time in my life where I was keeping myself isolated, and he had just gotten into a car accident, and I felt like I should reach out to him, because he had always been super nice to me. We talked for maybe five hours that night, and that just blossomed into a deeper friendship, and then a relationship. We just celebrated our five-year anniversary.

Do you have any game day essentials that you keep in your bag?

I have like 10 lip liners in my bag, five lip glosses, two lipsticks, and a powder puff. I have Listerine strips—yeah, it just gets the job done. Since I’ve been really into [filming] Get Ready with Me videos, I have my camera and my phone light.

Tell us about your bag.

This is my brand, Woods by Jordyn. I started making apparel, and lost the passion for it for a while. But, i’m a big accessories girl. I also started designing footwear, which is coming around the same time as the bags.

Do you have any superstitions?

New superstitions develop every single game. I’m like, okay, we won this time so I have to keep things the same. I have a little toy in my bag that his agent’s daughter gave me, it’s still in there. And I haven’t changed my nails.

How do you create a game day fit?

I LOVE a theme, I don’t know if it’s the Libra in me. But it’s the playoffs, so how many custom things can I come up with? I like to think about how creative we can get with it while still being comfortable. I never want to be too much, but I’m not quiet luxury either.

What’s your favorite way to celebrate a win?

Going to The Corner Store.

How did you and your partner first meet?

My husband and I met in early 2019 via Instagram. He actually slid into my DM’s—a modern-day love story.

I see you’re a new mother. So, what do you keep in your bag courtside?

I’m a new mother for the third time, so there’s always a mess of things. Diapers, of course, now that I have two kids wearing diapers. I keep wipes, extra clothes, and hand sanitizer, always. I always have some kind of medication. In my actual purse, I have my cards, extra ponytails, and things the girls put in there—like little toys, and sunglasses. I stuff my purse in the diaper bag.

What bag do you use?

It’s a large Goyard tote bag. Basically a backpack.

The bigger the better

My shoulders will hate me down the road, but ya know.

Is there anything unexpected in your bag on game days? Any good luck items?

I recently transitioned away from being superstitious because my husband is probably the least superstitious athlete out there. After the Met’s last post-season, I told him me and some of the wives were wearing the same jacket. My husband looked at me like I had a third eye. He was like, ‘Are you telling me you think we won because of the same stinky jacket?’ On record, I am no longer superstitious. He calls it being a prisoner of your own mind.

What’s your favorite way to celebrate a win as a family?

We don’t do the whole going out thing right now, being parents of small children. But he loves pizza. He always says he’s going to get drunk on pizza or cookies, and we can partake as a family.

How did you and your partner meet?

Braiden and I met in college at the University of Michigan. We were both incoming freshmen. I played volleyball, and he played football. We had this inner circle of both being athletes, but we actually met during COVID over the phone. I had one of his friends have him in a group chat, and then he Snapchatted me, and we kind of just started talking for six months until we got back on campus. It’ll be five years in August.

Tell me about your bag. It looks custom.

I actually started making the bags in college because Bryden made it to the Big Tens every year. His family and I would always go, so we were trying to figure out what we would wear. I would order bags from Amazon and get beads [and other embellishments] and hand-glue them on. We started DIYing everything.

Do you have anything you keep in your bag on game day?

I wouldn’t say I have anything that’s a ritual, but I ALWAYS have my camera in there, lip gloss, a portable charger, and my phone. You never know what’s going to happen.

What is your favorite way to celebrate a win?

Either going straight home and having drinks and a debriefing. Or, going out in Manhattan.

Where do you like to go in Manhattan?

We’re really new to the city but we love to go to The Ivory Peacock. We have so much more to explore.

Tell us about yourself and how you and your partner met

I’m from Spain, north of Barcelona. I met Breanna Stewart in Russia in 2018. We played together overseas. Long story short, she ruptured her tendon, and that’s actually how we started talking. Maybe it was a competition thing.

What bag do you have, and what do you keep in there on game day?

It’s a black Saint Laurent crossbody bag, but I have two different bags for daily use because I’m a mom of two; so I have a tote bag full of random things. For game day, I keep it simple because of the bag policy at Barclays. We love it there. I keep my house keys, hand sanitizer, my headphones, sunglasses, hand cream, and sometimes, lots of snacks.

Do you have any superstitions?

I used to. I gave up things like Oh I have to wear the same socks every day, or we’ll lose the game. Now that I don’t play anymore, I feel free.

What’s your favorite way to celebrate a win?

After last year’s championship, we celebrated for an entire week. We went to Spain after the celebration and when we came back we found an apple pie in the freezer. We were like, Oh how did that get there?

Did you eat the pie?

No! We didn’t know where it came from. But that’s how good the celebration was.

How do you create your game day outfits?

I like to keep it simple, comfortable, but chic. We’re in New York and I love fashion, so for me, I just want to be comfortable but with a little bit of New York edge.
