Award-winning Portland-based singer-songwriter and musician Kathryn Grimm releases her new single, “Say Goodbye To the Blues.”
Grimm explains, “‘Say Goodbye To The Blues’ is a feel-good song describing how effortlessly the joy brought on by being in Love can erase any sorrows. The Bliss – my favorite state to be in. It’s impossible not to be moved by the groove of the driving bass, the lilting melody, and the message – Love and the Blues cannot coexist.”
Grimm has written, recorded, and performed with the crème de la crème of artists, including Jeff Buckley, who played with her in Group Therapy. She jammed with Bo Diddley on the set of Rockula. When Al Hendrix heard her rendition of “Spanish Castle Magic,” he reached out to tell her she had his blessing. And she’s the guitarist in Michael Bolton’s video for “Dance With Me.”
Last year, Grimm dropped her EP, No Cash Blues, produced by Dennis Moody (Diana Ross, Missy Elliot). Her Blues Tools album features the song “Hot Date With Buzz”, written by bassist Mark Frere, with Jeff Buckley showing off his slide guitar ability.
Grimm’s projects include The Kathryn Grimm Band, The Jazz Rockets, Hippie Love Slave, and Babes in Portland, which showcases local talent and hosts a quarterly blues/rock/jazz jam, called Grimm Jam, at The MeKong Bistro.
Sharing why she plays in so many groups, Grimm says, “Studying and teaching helped me appreciate all styles, so having my many groups allows me the chance to play everything I love”.
“Say Goodbye To The Blues” rolls out on a fat, thrumming bassline accented by a bright guitar. As the melody takes shape, it forms a deliciously retro-flavored pop-rock tune that radiates feel-good vibes. A bright and happy guitar solo sustains the warm feeling of the melody as the buoyant vocals imbue the lyrics with luscious, optimistic timbres. For some reason, Grimm’s voice conjures up suggestions of Christine McVie. It’s a grand, evocative voice.
Bubbly and glossy, with “Say Goodbye To The Blues,” Kathryn Grimm delivers a refreshingly contagious pop-rock song.
