These melted witches may no longer be “defying gravity,” but they’re easy to make and they’re frightfully festive.

Don’t worry, no actual wicked witches were harmed in the making of our melted witch bark! This Halloween treat might just be the most tragically adorable treat you’ll ever lay eyes on. It’s made from puddles of melted chocolate swirled with purple and green candy melts, plus a mix of mini peanut butter cups, pretzel sticks, Oreos, chocolate Hershey’s Kisses and candy eyes.

Make this bark recipe with your kids after a day in the pumpkin patch, or serve it at a gathering with friends before partaking in a Wicked sing-a-long (paired with Wicked cocktails, of course). A tray of cake eyeballs and witch’s fingers would complete your spooky spread.

Melted Witch Bark Ingredients

  • Candy melts: Purple and green candy melts offer a colorful, witchy contrast to the chocolate.
  • Chocolate chips: Milk chocolate chips keep the melted witch bark wonderfully sweet. If you prefer, you could opt for semisweet or dark chocolate instead.
  • Candy eyeballs: If you have extra candy eyeballs after making the bark, whip up a batch of spider cookies or Martian marshmallows.
  • Mini peanut butter cups: The sharp ridges of a peanut butter cup mimic the bristles of a broom.
  • Pretzel sticks: It may not be a Nimbus 2000, but it sure is tasty. Grab a bag of your favorite brand of pretzel sticks and arrange one beside each peanut butter cup to make a broomstick.
  • Oreo cookies: Classic, double-stuffed, mint or peanut butter—anything goes. Press a single Oreo into the chocolate for a simple yet effective brim for the witch hats.
  • Chocolate kisses: For a pointy witch hat, grab a pack of classic Hershey’s Kisses. Use a little extra melted chocolate to adhere them to the Oreo cookie.

Directions

Spoon the melted chocolate and melted candy melts by tablespoons onto waxed paper-lined baking sheets. If desired, swirl them all together.

Step 2: Add eyes, brooms and witch hats

Working quickly, add the decorations. For brooms, place a pretzel stick its side, then add a mini peanut butter cup near the bottom. Place two candy eyes together on the candy coating, or open up Oreos and use the creme-covered halves to make even bigger eyes. To make witch hats, place a whole Oreo cookie into the chocolate, and top it with a milk chocolate kiss.

Step 3: Chill the bark

Refrigerate the bark until it’s firm, about 45 minutes. Once the bark is firm, break it apart to serve it.

Melted Witch Bark Variations

  • Swap the chocolate: If you don’t have chocolate chips, you can use 11 to 12 ounces of semisweet baking chocolate instead.
  • Try making a different kind of witch hat: For a little crunch, consider replacing the Hershey’s Kiss with a chocolate-covered Bugle cone. Their pointed shape also works remarkably well for this application.
  • Make a Nutter Butter broomstick: A Nutter Butter cookie cut in half also makes convincing broomstick bristles, as do black licorice laces and dried chow mein noodles.
  • Colors: Feel free to play with different candy coating colors. Swirl white, black or orange candy coating for an equally ghoulish look.

How to Store Melted Witch Bark

Store melted witch bark in an airtight food storage container. Store it at room temperature or in the refrigerator if your home is on the hot side to keep it fully set. Enjoy it within one week.

What is the best way to melt chocolate for melted witch bark?

There are so many effective ways to melt chocolate. Personally, I like melting chocolate on the stovetop in a double boiler. That said, you can use any method you prefer. Since there are three different colors at play here, the microwave is likely the most efficient option to have them all ready for swirling at the same time.

Do I need to thin down chocolate to make melted witch bark?

No. You don’t need to thin the chocolate before making melted witch bark. However, if you’d like your bark to have a nice shine and a good snap, you can melt up to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil into the chocolate chips. (Fun fact: Adding coconut oil to melted chocolate is also how you make homemade magic shell for sundaes.)

Where can I find candy eyeballs to decorate melted witch bark?

Candy eyeballs are usually readily available in the baking aisle around Halloween. Otherwise, check your store’s seasonal section. If you can’t find them, try your local craft store—Michaels has candy eyes in its candy-making section. And you can find them on Amazon.
