Tillamook just ended the butter-versus-mayo grilled cheese debate once and for all with its new Butternaise spread.
There are few greater pleasures than the crackly crunch of a golden, buttery grilled cheese giving way to molten cheddar. It’s comfort in its purest form and an edible art that many of us have been perfecting since childhood. But even the most seasoned sandwich makers can struggle with that eternal question: Butter or mayonnaise?
It’s a debate as old as the griddle itself. Some swear by the richness of butter, while others claim that mayonnaise gives the toast a superior golden crust—and both camps have a point. Now, one beloved dairy brand is stepping in to settle the score once and for all, bringing both sides together in one jar.
What is the new Tillamook spread?

Tillamook has solved the debate with the launch of Butternaise, a first-of-its-kind spread designed specifically for the ultimate grilled cheese. The Oregon-based dairy brand teamed up with Kewpie (the cult favorite Japanese mayo) and Spiceology’s Alvin Cailan Fries Szn spice blend to create a special spread that marries the best of both worlds: the creamy richness of Tillamook Extra Creamy Salted Butter and the savory umami tang of Kewpie mayonnaise. The result is a bold, buttery flavor and a crisp, evenly bronzed crust worthy of your favorite diner’s sandwich press.
Tillamook Executive Chef Josh Archibald says blending butter and mayo is the real secret to the ultimate melt, adding that Butternaise was inspired by his own “perfect grilled cheese” technique. While it was made with grilled cheese in mind, this spread can also elevate paninis, breakfast sandwiches and even roasted vegetables or baked potatoes.
Where can I get Tillamook Butternaise?
