If any two people know how to leverage the celebrity rumor mill, they’re Anyone but You costars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. These two leaned into real-life rumors that they were dating while promoting their hit 2023 romantic comedy—and more than a year later, they have perhaps not-so-inadvertently renewed speculation about a potential romance. (Vanity Fair has reached out to Powell’s and Sweeney’s reps for comment.)
Here’s what we know. Last week sources told Us Weekly that Sweeney and longtime fiancé Jonathan Davino had called off their wedding and were working through the “major issues” in their relationship. Sweeney then headed to Texas to attend the wedding of Powell’s sister, Leslie. This development roughly echoes the plot of Anyone but You, in which Sweeney’s onscreen sister gets married to one of Powell’s closest friends.
After Leslie posted a photo with Sweeney, and local restaurants in Dallas confirmed that Sweeney and Powell had dined together with their fellow wedding guest John Stamos, the internet decided to draw its own excited conclusions.
Sweeney’s reunion with Powell recalls how the rumors about their relationship began in the first place. While filming Anyone but You, Powell broke up with his girlfriend, leading to gossip that he’d had a workplace affair with Sweeney. The pair playfully denied the narrative on Saturday Night Live last March, where they noted that Sweeney’s then fiancé was a producer on Anyone but You—and present for the entire shoot. “We leaned into the chemistry, we leaned into the fun, we leaned into all of it—and the movie benefited,” Powell told Vanity Fair in May 2024.
“We definitely are very supportive of each other’s careers,” Sweeney told VF in November. “We watch and talk about each other’s projects all the time, or even if we’re both debating between projects, we’ll call each other up and ask for advice.”
And professional opportunities appear to be Sweeney’s top priority. The Monday after Powell’s sister’s wedding, a source told People that Sweeney and Davino had officially called it quits because the actor “didn’t feel right about” their upcoming nuptials. Sweeney’s dance card is also full thanks to projects like the upcoming third season of Euphoria, an adaptation of the best-selling novel The Housemaid, and a biopic about boxer Christy Martin. “She’s not ready to settle down,” the source told People. “They only lasted for this long because it was hard for her to break it off. They didn’t split because there is no love. They split because she just wants to focus on her career right now.”
For the record, Powell is also “too busy right now” for a relationship, according to his mother, Cyndy—who spoke to the Daily Mail after her daughter’s wedding. “They’re definitely not together,” she added of him and his former costar, clarifying that Sweeney is “really close friends” with the whole Powell family and that there is “nothing going on behind closed doors.”
When asked if Powell and Sweeney’s relationship might develop into anything more, Cyndy did not mince words: “That is none of my business. I just want what’s best for everybody. I just want somebody that loves him unconditionally and he loves unconditionally, and they take care of each other and live happily ever after.”
