While solving the quarterback problem from last season was the biggest decision to make for the Vikings offense this year, finding a genuine WR3 was also important. The Minnesota Vikings did just that with the free agency signing of Jauan Jennings.

Why Jauan Jennings Will be Vital to the Success of the Vikings Offense

The San Francisco 49ers selected Jennings with a seventh-round pick back in 2020. It wasn’t until the second season that Jennings made the roster and started to establish himself.

Over the last five seasons, he has 210 catches for 2,581 yards and 22 touchdowns. Over the last two seasons, Jennings has kicked it up a gear with 132 catches for 1,618 yards and 15 touchdowns. Those are some serious numbers for a WR3 and make a big difference to how opposing teams have to treat the Vikings offense.

It’s not just the potential numbers that appeal but also Jennings style of play. At 6’3″ and 212 lbs, he is a big-bodied, powerful receiver, something that the Vikings have lacked in recent years. That size will help in the run game.

As his recent TD record suggests, he is a very good red-zone target, which is an area the Vikings have struggled in. Too many times, the Vikings have gotten within the shadow of the goalposts, only to have drives stall. Jennings’ proficiency should help solve that problem.

There is another lesser-seen part to Jennings’s skill set. He became the second player in Super Bowl history to throw for a touchdown and catch a touchdown three seasons ago. He was at it again in the playoffs, throwing a touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey last season for another touchdown.

Kevin O’Connell isn’t shy about drawing up trick plays and has used Justin Jefferson in the past to throw passes. It’s something to keep an eye out for.

Strength in Depth

Minnesota has an extremely talented pair of WRs at the top of the depth chart in Jefferson and Jordan Addison. At the bottom of the depth chart, they have a pair of young, exciting prospects in Tai Felton and Myles Price (both had big moments in the preseason to suggest they can make a jump forward). Jennings fits perfectly in the middle as the veteran receiver, making the Vikings’ receiving corps extremely strong.

If Jennings is also capable of taking on a bigger role, history suggests that might be needed. Jefferson and Addison have never played 17 games together in a season since Addison entered the league in 2023 – although it was only Addison’s suspension that got in the way last season.

However, Jennings has experience playing WR2 from his time in San Francisco. He will serve as a credible WR2 if the situation arises.

Without a doubt Jennings will be a vital part of the Vikings offense this year.
