Out of all the characters Stanley Tucci has played in his more than 40-year career, there’s one in particular that he relates to the most.
While making a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show to promote his new Netflix movie, The Electric State, the Oscar-nominated actor was asked by guest host Kal Penn, “Which of your characters is most like you in real life?”
He quickly answered: “Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada! He’s very stylish, and he can be a bit caustic. But he’s got a good heart.”
He playfully added, “I mean, I think I have a good heart.”
Tucci starred alongside Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in the 2006 classic as the fashion-obsessed art director at Runway magazine. Throughout the film, he takes Andy (Hathaway) under his wing and helps her navigate working as the assistant to Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Streep.)
Tucci commented last year that it was difficult for him to nab roles following the film’s release. “After The Devil Wears Prada, I couldn’t get a job, and I didn’t quite understand that, but that’s just the way it was,” he recalled. “So I went and did stuff that I didn’t necessarily want to do, but I did it.”
Since The Devil Wears Prada came out, he’s accumulated credits in Julie & Julia (starring alongside Streep again), The Lovely Bones, Easy A, Burlesque, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Hunger Games films, Spotlight and Beauty and the Beast, among others. Last year, he played a cardinal in Conclave, which won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.
Last July, it was announced that a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada was in the works. And while not much has been released, the original film’s writer, Aline Brosh McKenna, is penning a script.
Earlier this year, on the Palm Springs International Film Festival red carpet, Tucci told The Hollywood Reporter: “My hope is we’ll be making it soon.”
